Once two-thirds of the psychedelic rock group Mystery Fyre, the brother duo of Wes and Joseph Knorr are no strangers to sharing a stage. Their newest undertaking, Knorrwood, pays homage to their roots while digging their heels into folk rock. Since its inception in 2020, Knorrwood has become a thrilling project to watch carve its own path.
A major milestone in this path is now underway: Knoorwood’s debut album. The duo is pulling out all the stops as the album’s Kickstarter Campaign grows closer. In celebration of the launch, Knorrwood will be hosting a live stream party on March 28th, 2023. You can RSVP here. The first single from the debut was released today. “Five High,” now streaming on most listening platforms, follows an official music video shot at Columcille Megalith Park. The Celtic stone park, described as a place of “myth and mystery,” brings a landscape perfectly paired with Knorrwood’s sound.
“Five High” beings with the lone chords of Wes Knorr’s acoustic guitar before being quickly joined by the multi-percussion of bongos, bass drum, and cymbal of Joey Knorr. It is the sound people would expect from the image and branding of Knorrwood. A book’s cover that makes it easy to judge musical inspiration is drawn from the simplicity and beauty of the forest.
However, the organic starting line for “Five High” quickly picks up in pace. Acoustic chords are traded in for electric, and a full drumkit is introduced. The sound is full, robust, grounding, and electrifying; holding a mirror to classical musical elements while incorporating modern tools and soundscapes.
Although maybe not considered the most “modern” of tools, Wes Knoor’s incorporation of the theremin breaks the glass ceiling and lifts Knorrwood into a realm all its own. The playfulness between traditional and progressive, the natural world with a tinge of psychedelia, is a captivating performance to witness unfold.
